Net-A-Porter’s ART CAPSUL Collection

NET-A-PORTER, the luxury fashion ecommerce website, recently announced the launch of ART CAPSUL, a series of exclusive capsule collections of bespoke garments curated by art curator and style icon Stacy Engman. Beginning in July, the retailer will sell made-to-order items from top contemporary artists including Mickalene Tomas, Marina Abramovic, George Condo, Terence Koh, and Vik Muniz. ART CAPSUL will showcase iconic elements from each of the artists’ works (there most definitely will be some sort of swarovski-studded ensemble from Tomas!)

While we wait on pins and needles for the complete collection to be unveiled in just a few weeks, I bring you some works characteristic of the artists to get our minds working about what these bespoke items will look like!

Highlights from Frieze New York

In case the New York art world was starting to get a bit weary because they hadn’t hosted a contemporary art fair in a two whole months, Frieze returned for its sophomore edition this past weekend. Under a deluxe tent on Randalls Island, 180 blue-chip galleries from all over the world brought the cream of the crop from their rosters of artists. And according to an article by Katya Kazakina on Bloomberg, it was well worth the trip. Sales within the art market have continued to soar, and Frieze proved to be no different. Kazakina references that Hauser & Wirth quickly sold 40 small versions of the gigantic puppy outside by Paul McCarthy for $25,000 each, as well as works by Rashid Johnson and Matthew Day Jackson, ranging in price from $90,000 to $175,000. Luhring Augustine sold out its Tom Friedman-devoted booth in the first hour and a half. David Zwirner sold a huge batch of Thomas Ruff photographs on opening day, all priced between $7,000 and $95,000. And they weren’t the only ones (read more here).

But whiles sales might be the most important goal for dealers at an art fair, the choice to participate is also spurred by brand awareness, maintaining an aura of prestige, and to have personal interaction with buyers. For myself, an art fair is  an opportunity to survey the range of incredible contemporary art being made across the globe today. Basel Obsession 2: Vik Muniz

I have always loved Vik Muniz’s photographs. His unbounding creativity in the way he experiments with non-traditional materials, such as chocolate and sugar, junk and toys, to create the images he captures through his camera lens is inspiring. After visiting a private collection earlier this year filled with large scale photographs by the artist, I began to track and admire his work more and more. Muniz currently has a retrospective at Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga – his largest European exhibition to date – and has had numerous solo shows including one at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

At Art Basel Miami Beach this year, Vik Muniz showed a new work entitled Flowers, after Warhol that was recently part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years. You can barely tell from far away that these are photographs, composed of small objects in order to form images distinctively similar to Warhols flower silkscreens. Also on view at the Sikkema Jenkins booth was a photograph Muniz composed in a similar manner to reference Jasper Johns’ famous flag work. I know Muniz will continue to make a name for himself as one of the foremost contemporary art photographers.

MOCA Los Angeles x Levi’s x Intel

Well this is one unique threesome. The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art has collaborated with Levi’s and Intel to create a line of t-shirts designed by young talent in the arts and entertainment industries. Actor Gael García Bernal, singer Santigold, and artists Mariko Mori and Xu Bing each designed a shirt that are being sold at MOCA, on Levi’s website, and at their retail locations for $34 each. Levi’s and Intel have pledged $100,000 from sales of the tees to benefit the museum’s educational programs.

The collaboration is parter of a larger effort by the jeans company to redefine their brand, in hopes that consumers will think of them for more than just good denim. This is not Levi’s first art world engagement; the brand has worked with Vik Muniz to create an exclusive t-shirt, as well as sponsored a film workshop at MOCA LA last year. And Jeffrey Deitch, director of MOCA, is eager to launch additional partnerships of this kind with similar brands, as exemplified by past collaborations with  Chanel, MAC Cosmetics, and Fendi. Deitch told WWD that fashion brands are more often becoming key benefactors of the arts, as the relationship between the worlds of art and fashion continues to become more intertwined.

Art I’m Loving… Black and White Photographs on Artspace

For those who haven’t explored Artspace yet, I highly suggest you spend your procrastination time at work doing so (it is much more exciting than Facebook – trust me). Artspace is a new online start-up hoping to make artworks by big name contemporary artists more accessible worldwide. Essentially, if you don’t live in New York, London, or anywhere else with established contemporary art galleries at arms reach, Artspace gives you the opportunity to purchase their high quality works from wherever you can get an internet connection. Artspace also partners with artists directly to produce limited editions and prints, as well as with museums and institutions. Why I like it? It’s affordable – which means I have the opportutnity to collect works by artists like Vik Muniz, John Baldessari, or Ed Ruscha without auctioning off everything I own.

Right now I am really into black and white photographs, and am eying a few on the site. (FYI – my birthday is coming up in October).
